The Multi-Annual Residency of Juvenile Smooth Hammerhead Shark in an Oceanic Island Nursery

چکیده

The increased risk of local extinction becomes critical for sharks depending on the narrow and isolated coastal habitats oceanic islands. This includes large pelagic that use such as nurseries, previously hypothesized smooth hammerhead Sphyrna zygaena , least known cosmopolitan sharks. We used a combination acoustic satellite telemetry in juvenile population Faial Pico islands, Azores, mid-north Atlantic, to confirm if this archipelago holds answer questions related their function spatial–temporal stability. Our long-term tracking data showed cluster individual core home ranges specific areas north shore Faial, surface positions from five Argos-linked tagged individuals also clustering overlap those up 1 year. These patterns seem reveal true habitat preference within Faial-Pico island (sub) shark, thus constitute strong evidence area be considered nursery. Some remained nursery 4 years, especially during summers. Sharks diel behavior, typically using inshore nurseries day moving further offshore night, which they activity dove deeper, most possibly feed. speculate feeding opportunities, expanded trophic niche, reduced predatory pressure may key evolutionary driver existence, prolonged use, even at islands by shark. Given these essential fish species, should explicitly included spatial management measures regional scales, play role greater importance Atlantic species.

Maneuvering in juvenile carcharhinid and sphyrnid sharks: the role of the hammerhead shark cephalofoil.

The peculiar head morphology of hammerhead sharks has spawned a variety of untested functional hypotheses. One of the most intuitively appealing ideas is that the anterior foil acts, as in canard-winged aircraft, to increase maneuverability. We tested this hypothesis by determining whether juveniles of two hammerhead species (Sphyrna tiburo and S. lewini) turn more sharply, more often, and with...

Virgin birth in a hammerhead shark.

Parthenogenesis has been documented in all major jawed vertebrate lineages except mammals and cartilaginous fishes (class Chondrichthyes: sharks, batoids and chimeras). Reports of captive female sharks giving birth despite being held in the extended absence of males have generally been ascribed to prior matings coupled with long-term sperm storage by the females. Here, we provide the first gene...

Hotspots within hotspots? Hammerhead shark movements around Wolf Island, Galapagos Marine Reserve

Are pelagic species such as sharks and tuna distributed homogenously or heterogeneously in the oceans? Large assemblages of these species have been observed at seamounts and offshore islands in the eastern tropical Pacific, which are considered hotspots of pelagic biodiversity. Is the species distribution uniform at these hotspots or do species aggregate at a finer spatial scale at these sites?...
